How Advanced Directives Keep You In Control

July 16, 2014

As trauma survivors there’s one moment (or many) for each of us when we look ahead and say, “What if________???” As in, what if something really horrible happens to me?

Often, we spend those thoughts on how to prevent disaster, which is a great place to focus. Planning how to keep yourself safe helps you learn how to be present and stay in control today.

On the flip side, planning for how to stay in control even when you’re not fully in control can be beneficial to you and your loved ones. That’s where advanced directives come in.

Technically defined, advanced directives “are legal documents that allow people to communicate their decisions about medical care to family, friends, and health care professionals in the event that they are unable to make those decisions themselves—for example, due to being unconscious or in a coma.”

How advanced directives work and their role in your life were the topic of my conversation with Leah Sharrock, an expert in this area. Together we covered the “5 Wishes” document that helps you easily and for $0 create your very own advanced directives.

Leah also offered a way for you to obtain the document for free by calling Hospice of Palm Beach County: 561.227.5152. Plus, she told some great stories about the 5 Wishes in action.

My fave quote:

“It’s empowering to take control…. this document is a gift to your family and friends.”
