THE POSSESSIVE ABUSER
A reading of the second half of Chapter 15, “High School” from the memoir, “No Tears for my Father”
Vigaland Book Podcast #18 of the Memoir, “No Tears for my Father”

Throughout my high school years…and for several years after, I felt like that dragonfly snared in a cobweb in the photo above. That’s how it feels to be living with an obsessed and possessive abuser. You try and try to extricate yourself, but the stickiness of the possessive abuser’s web keeps you ensnared.
So even though I travelled back and forth daily to Loretto College School, my father’s rules kept me from hanging with friends or doing all the things any normal teenage girl loves to do. Even when my father and I sauntered up the streets in our area to visit a delicatessen or pick up some groceries, there was no sense of freedom. He would talk non-stop about whatever interested him, but all the while kept his eyes on me.
So, as I relate in this Podcast, #18, the second half of Chapter 15 of  “No Tears for my Father”, one day he tore a piece out of me right in the street when he thought I’d been looking at a young man walking towards us:
“So! Did he appeal to you?”
I came out of my semi-coma and asked, “Who?”
My response angered him. “Don’t bullshit me! Who? That guy that just walked by. Don’t pretend you weren’t looking at him.”
I turned to my father, fear gathering in my gut and throat as I replied honestly:
“Papa…I never saw any guy…”
