This Week in Naval History
SEALAB II was the second of a series of underwater habitats developed by the United States Navy to test the viability humans living in underwater isolation for extended periods of time. Information obtained the SEALAB experiments also advanced the science of deep sea diving.

On August 28, 1965, the first of three teams were lower to a depth of 62m and moved into Sealab II, which had been nicknamed the "Tilton Hilton“.

Each team spent 15 days in the habitat, but astronaut (or in this case aquanaut) Scott Carpenter remained below for a record 30 days. The teams tested physiological factors, tools, salvage methods, and a heated drysuit. One member of the team was a bottlenose dolphin named Tuffy from the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program. The teams worked somewhat unsuccessfully, to teach Tuffy to carry supplies from the surface to SEALAB.
