This Week in Naval History
William Sterling "Deak" Parsons was born on November 26, 1901, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy in 1922. As his initial assignment he was posted to the battleship USS Idaho, where he was placed in charge of one of the 14-inch gun turrets.

After a series of additional munitions and ballistics assignments, Parsons was promoted to Captain and assigned to the research laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico as Associate Director, serving as J. Robert Oppenheimer's second in command.

On August 6, 1945, flying on the Enola Gay as weaponeer, Parsons approved the choice of Hiroshima as the target, and gave final approval for the atomic bomb to be released. Four days later, as a result of this mission, Parsons was awarded the Silver Star, and was promoted to the wartime rank of Commodore.
