This Week in Naval History
On July 26, 1945, USS Indianapolis, a Portland class heavy cruiser, arrived at Tinian island, 80 miles north of Guam, carrying parts and enriched uranium for the atomic bomb Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan two weeks later.

From there, she proceeded on to Guam, then headed for the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan. Just after midnight on July 30, Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. The explosions caused significant damage, and twelve minutes later, she sank. About 300 crewmen went down with the ship, with the remaining 900 left in the sea with minimal lifeboats.

Almost 4 days passed before the wreck was known, and by then, only 317 members of the crew could be saved.
