This Week in Naval History
On July 20, 1969, former US Navy pilot Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon of Earth. However, you may not have heard of the other Naval connection to that monumental event.

Launched on 30 August 1943 and commissioned on 29 November 1943, the USS Hornet, hull number CV-12, a US Navy Essex class aircraft carrier, was a key piece in that historic first lunar landing.

On July 24, 1969, Hornet recovered astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and their spacecraft Columbia. Four months later, the USS Hornet repeated this performance as Primary Recovery Ship for the recovery of Apollo 12, America's second lunar landing mission.
