5: Marin Cogan on “making it”

November 09, 2015

This week I talked to the fabulous Marin Cogan of New York Magazine!

On covering the 2010 freshman class in Congress: “In a way it was like they were freshmen and I was a freshman, so I got to just follow them around all the time and sort of, get to be a newbie with them and sort of write through their point of view.”

“In some ways, I think being a woman has been a great advantage to me. I think it’s getting better all the time, but there still are still ton a ton of women who choose to make careers out of writing about politics or sports, which is now something I’m doing. And so to be a woman and to be in that space often means that editors want your voice, which can be a benefit. I’d like to live in a world where it’s not a benefit.”

On being in “This Town”: “It’s a weird mixture of shame but also bemusement about the whole thing.”

On freelancing: “I just feel like if more people were willing to take a little risk and try cutting the cord and freelancing for even six months, then people would be much better for it.”
