Can Soynuts Reverse Metabolic Syndrome?

November 02, 2015

Metabolic syndrome is a well-recognized precursor to diabetes. Can soynuts reverse this syndrome?Metabolic syndrome is a well-recognized precursor to diabetes.  A study, which was recently published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome in three separate groups. Consuming soy foods in place of animal foods was more effective than standard DASH eating plan, which was an expected outcome.  However, the results were surprising in that the women who ate a half-cup of soy nuts a day had better results than women who ate either meat or soy protein. In fact, soy nuts were better than either meat or soy protein in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood sugar.  They also improved blood vessel function the best. Marie Oser joins host Michael Schwartz to discuss these findings.
