Is It Ever Too Late To Start Training? Not For 92 Year Champion Indoor Rower Old Richard Morgan

February 06, 2024

I just learned about 93 year old Richard Morgan this past weekend. Richard is a 92 year old indoor rowing champion who didn’t start exercising until he was 73! That’s bananas!

Further, he has many of the biomarkers of a 40 year old.

Richard Morgan, a nonagenarian who, despite his advanced age, demonstrated remarkable physical prowess during physiological and performance tests conducted by investigators in Ireland and the Netherlands. The results, published in December, revealed Morgan’s high muscle mass, healthy body fat percentage, and impressive cardiopulmonary function and physical performance. Morgan, who started exercising in his 70s, showed adaptations similar to those of much younger individuals.

The study suggests that the conventional expectations of age-related physical decline may not be inevitable, highlighting the potential for the human body to maintain high physical health for an extended period, especially through regular exercise. While acknowledging potential genetic factors, the importance of exercise is a powerful intervention for health and longevity, regardless of age. Morgan’s story serves as inspiration, showing that it’s never too late to start reaping the benefits of physical activity, promoting mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.
