Surely You're Joking

Maria Spiropulu and the tantalizing massive scalar.

December 30, 2015

Maria Spiropulu is one of the key experimentalists behind the recent conformational discovery of Higgs Boson, (sometime begrudgingly tagged as “the God Particle”), at the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Spiropulu is the author of "Where is Einstein?", the final chapter in "My Einstein: Essays by Twenty-four of the World's Leading Thinkers on the Man, His Work, and His Legacy"
Spiropulu is the academic descendant of Enrico Fermi, which is good because Maria was also a Fermi Fellow at Fermilab and now studies the symmetries Fermions.

Spiropulu was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, for her leadership and efforts in the search for supersymmetry and extra dimensions, as a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

She was born and raised in west Macedonia, Greece and speaks five languages; a useful skill when interacting with scientists from all over the world as is found at CERN.
