Star Wars and Spirituality with Sid Bridge

August 25, 2014

In 1977, the world was shown the battle between good and evil in a way they’d never seen before. Elements of ‘Star Wars’ – from Joseph Campbell’s “hero’s journeyâ€, to Kurosawa’s ‘The Hidden Fortress’, and Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon – had been bubbling just under the surface for decades, if not centuries, but it took a journey to a galaxy far, far away to show audiences just how close they really were.

‘Star Wars’ has since spoken to generations of boys, girls, men, women and everything in between, remaining relevant until at least 2015, when the much-ballyhooed ‘Episode VII’ is scheduled to hit theaters. But what about ‘Star Wars’ connected – and continues to connect – with its fans, especially fans looking for guidance? Looking for a code to cling to? Is it the aesthetic – that “it all just looks cool†– or is the otherworldly goodness, and power, of the Force and the Jedi? If that’s the case – thousands famously declared their religion as “Jedi†in 2001 and there’s now an official “Jediism†religion – why did the Dark Side and Darth Vader become some of the more iconic images from the original ‘Star Wars’?

Is the Death Star a giant idol? Did the Emperor and Darth Vader use weapons similar to those that helped stoke Anti-Semitism leading up to the Second World War? To help us discuss these weighty matters, we welcome our good friend from the Geek’s Night of Comedy, Sid Bridge, who drops some serious knowledge napalm on our meeting of Star Wars and Spirituality.
