Masters Milers

Coach Chick Hislop

April 23, 2020

My guest for the latest episode of the Masters Milers podcast is Coach Chick Hislop. Coach Hislop spent 10 years coaching high school track and field before going on to a 38 year coaching career at Weber State University in Utah, where he is a member of their sports hall of fame. He served as the Head US Olympic Distance Coach in 1996. A few years after he retired from coaching at Weber State, he reconnected with one of his former athletes, Brad Barton and together they have broken several world and American masters track and field records, including last spring when Brad shattered the 50-54 age group WR for the mile by running 4:19. As some of you may recall, Brad was a guest on this podcast shortly before he set that record.

Coach Hislop is a disciple of another coaching legend, Bill Bowerman. He shared some great insights into the approach he took with his high school and college athletes, how he had to adjust his training approach when he started working with Brad as a Masters Runner and many other gems.
