Club Nationals Preview with Paul Carlin – The Running Professor

My guest today on the masters milers podcast is Paul Carlin, aka the running professor. I’m finishing this recording on Friday the 13th of December. I asked Paul to come on the show because tomorrow is the USATF Club National Cross Country Championships in Lehigh, PA. I haven’t personally run in this race before, but it’s one of the premier events for masters runners on the USATF calendar, especially because of the highly competitive team nature of the event. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Paul, he is an excellent masters distance runner in the 70-74 age group. But more importantly for purposes of today’s show, Paul has a website called runningprof.com where he writes up exhaustively researched race previews and recaps of USATF long distance running events, including club cross. It really is amazing what Paul does on his website – he searches all the entrants in big events, then looks up their race histories and uses all of this data to make predictions about both team and individual competition. If you ever participate in a USATF masters long distance event, I encourage you to check out runningprof.com. For today’s show, I asked Paul to come on to give a preview of who the major contenders are for both men and women across the various age groups on an individual and team basis. If you are participating in the meet, I think you will enjoy our conversation, and if you ever get the chance to race a USATF long distance event, of which there are a handful throughout the year, definitely check out runningprof.com. The work Paul does on there is thankless, but it really is a fun gift to the masters running community.
