Masters Milers

Masters Milers

Boyd Carrington

November 12, 2019

My latest guest is Boyd Carrington. Boyd is a 47 year old who is actually running as fast as he ever has across a range of distances from the mile through the marathon. In 2019, Boyd won the 40-49 age group in the 5th Ave Mile in a time of 4:25, completely dominating the competition as second place was a full 8 seconds behind in 4:33. Although the mile is Boyd’s favorite event, he is very competitive across a range of distances. Within the past year, he ran PRs of 2:34 in the marathon, 1:13 for the half marathon and 15:40 for 5K while also posting stellar results in a number of road miles over the summer. Boyd lives in Long Island, NY so I’ve competed against him a number of times over the years in various local races, most notably the 5th Ave Mile where Boyd has twice outkicked me for the masters title. He’s a great competitor and a smart tactical racer and he is also very thoughtful about training and racing. A few years ago, Boyd started training with and coaching Allie Schneider, a severely autistic man who also happens to be an excellent runner. Boyd helped pace Allie in last year’s Boston Marathon, among other races. In our conversation, we talk about how coaching Allie and others helped Boyd improve his own running. I hope you enjoy our conversation

Perfect Mile-great book that chronicles the race between Roger Bannister, John Landy and Wes Santee to become the first sub-4 minute miler. (Landy was coached by Percy Cerutty for a while): https://tinyurl.com/ye6prkpx
