Masters Milers Podcast Episode 1: Olympian John Trautmann on gettining back into running after a lengthy hiatus from the sport, chasing and breaking masters records, his training approach and more

We kicked the podcast off in style: John Trautmann was my guest on the first ever episode of the Masters Milers podcast.

John has had an amazing career in running, starting as a precocious talent in high school and continuing all the way to the present as an extremely accomplished masters runner and now a coach, with a notable absence from the sport in the middle. When John was in high school, he set the national record in the 3000m, breaking the record of a guy named Steve Prefontaine. John’s record stood for almost 20 years until Galen Rupp broke it in 2004. John went on to run for Georgetown where he became an All-American, NCAA Champion and WR holder in DMR. After college, John ran professionally and went on to win the 5K at Olympic Trials in 1992 and represented the US in the Olympics; Unfortunately, injuries derailed his career as an elite athlete and he stopped training and competing for many years before getting back into it in his 40s as a masters runner. The story of his comeback as a masters runner, which culminated in him setting the 45+ WR in the mile (running a 4:12 mile at age 46), has been chronicled in Runners World and elsewhere (https://www.runnersworld.com/advanced/a20858886/john-trautmann-overweight-to-world-record-holder/
