Checklists Improve Care in the Back of the Ambulance

February 28, 2014

I recently returned from Washington, D.C. and the EMS Today conference put on by JEMS and Pennwell Corporation. While there, I joined the other EMS podcasters from the ProMed Network to record some special segments from the Physio-Control podcast studio there.

One of the things I get to do at this conference is talk with the EMS 10 Innovation Awardees. These are the individuals who have created or started some innovative patient care or system improvement. In this episode I chat with Shaughn Maxwell from Snohomish County, Washington.

Shaughn created a series of checklists, modeled after those used in surgical procedures, to improve EMS patient care in the back of ambulances. By using these checklists, EMTs and paramedics are able to make sure they deliver consistent and high quality patient care each and every time they enter the field on a call. Follow Shaughn and contact him via Twitter at @checklistmedic.

Stay tuned here to the Innovations in Patient Care podcast to check out the very best in EMS and hospital care. I’ll be bringing you all of the EMS 10 Awardees over the coming months here on the show.
