Improving Resuscitation With Longer Cardiac Arrest Attempts

July 15, 2015

This week on the show, I bring you a special segment from EMS Today 2015. EMS Garage host Chris Montera, the Geekymedic, interviewed Dr. Brent Myers of Wake County EMS in North Carolina. Dr. Myers talked at the EMS Today conference about his system’s policy of extending cardiac arrest resuscitation efforts beyond the industry standard of twenty minutes. The Wake County, North Carolina EMS system found that spending more time on cardiac arrest resuscitation could improve patient outcomes. Their resuscitation attempts last thirty to forty-five minutes and they've seen changes in patient survival rates as a result.

This doesn't happen in a vacuum. The Wake County emergency medical services system also implements the highest standards of cardiac arrest care based on the latest ECC guidelines from the American Heart Association. With high quality CPR, therapeutic hypothermia and other interventions, patients recovering from extended resuscitation attempts are having amazing outcomes and deserve our full attention to their care during resuscitation. Check it out!

That is going to wrap of this segment and episode of Innovations in Patient Care. Stay tuned for more segments from the top health care, EMS and nursing conferences this year as we continue to focus on ways that healthcare professionals just like you are providing innovative care and improving patient outcomes all the time.

Thanks again to Physio-Control for sponsoring this and other episodes of Innovations in Patient Care. Make sure you say thank you to them.
