What Should I Write About? The Answer Is Surprisingly Simple | The School of Internet Marketing - Episode #24

June 23, 2014

Do you struggle with generating ideas to write about on your website? Concerned your content will not attract the search engines or the visitors? Business leaders are forever asking the question: “What should I write about?†when they are thinking about their online marketing.

Content is very important and Google is forever attempting to adjust the way it ranks pages so quality content comes to the forefront. If you’re interested in learning how to help your website come out on top of the Google rankings, then you’ll want to invest 20 minutes to listen to this podcast. In this edition of The School of Internet Marketing podcast, your host Nick Jaworski interviews James Martell, founder of The School of Internet Marketing and Vice President of Product Development for jambMEDIA about what you should write about on your website to attract your customers and the search engines.

The Changing Nature of Keywords

James explains that in the old days of Google searches, a user would often enter in one or two keywords in order to search for something on the internet. Now that has changed and the words have become phrases which can be 10 words long. This has come about because of mobile technology, where individuals will literally speak into their device to start the search for a solution.

There have also been changes to how Google and other search engines have arranged the search results. The constant change in algorithms has meant keyword stuffing is now a bad habit which can have your webpage ignored by Google, as James explains. Therefore you need to carefully consider which keyword to use and use it in a manner which will not remove you from the search engine results.

The Audience is Central to the Solution

How your intended audience is using Google, is critical to the way you are developing content. Understanding what they are thinking will support you in writing the content for your website and blog. But that is not the only problem you may be suffering from. Take a moment and answer these questions:

  • Are you struggling with knowing what topics to write about on your blog?
  • Do you know what your customers are searching for on the internet?
  • Do you struggle with keeping a consistence in your article publication?
  • Do you get confused to know who you should write for: the visitor or the search engine?
  • Do you not know what the ideal length of an article should be?

If you answered yes to any of those questions then your online marketing efforts could be faltering and you might need a little help.

Using the Audience to Generate Content

James goes on to give real-life examples of how business owners can overcome their struggles to develop content which will rank well on Google and also appeal to the reader. His advice includes how you can use your audience to support your content ideas, how often you should post articles and how long your content should be. James ends the interview with great tips to ensure you don’t fall into some of the old habits which may have worked in the past, but don’t today.
