GameTime Cleveland 182: Deng It

January 08, 2014
Summary:

The Cavs find a trade partner for Andrew Bynum. The Browns search for a head coach continues. The Buckeyes lose a thrilling Orange Bowl to Clemson. And the NFL Playoffs are underway. There’s a lot to talk about.  It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 43:30

1Q: Bynum traded to Bulls for Deng

  • The trade with the Lakers did not come about because the Lakers wanted draft picks and Dion Waiters. That wasn’t going to happen.

  • We send some draft picks to Chicago:

    • future first-round draft pick owed to the Cavs by the Sacramento Kings from a 2011 trade for J.J. Hickson. The Bulls will get the Kings’ pick if it falls outside the top 12 in 2014 or outside the top 10 picks in 2015, 2016 or 2017.

    • the 2015 and 2016 second-round picks the Portland Trail Blazers owed the Cavs.

    • ability to swap draft positions with the Cavs in 2015 as long as the Cavs’ draft pick is outside the top 14 picks.

  • The Cavs get Deng:

    • 28yo, averaging 19 pts, 6.9 rebs & 3.7 assists in 23 games.

    • bothered by an injured Achilles that caused him to miss nine games over the past six weeks. He played in the Bulls’ last three games.

2Q: How does this change the Cavs this year?

  • Woefully weak Eastern Conference is dominated by Miami and Indiana. Everybody else around or below .500. Cavs only 3 gms out of 8th place and they are 11-23!!

  • This should propel the Cavs to a playoff team, provided they stay healthy.

  • Do you think the Cavs are done? Or will they make other moves before the 2/20 trade deadline?

3Q: Buckeye flame out against Clemson

  • OSU loses 40-35 in a thrilling game against Clemson.

  • Buckeyes defense finally exposed by a team that could pass.

  • Clemson:

    • Boyd: 31/40 passing, 378yds, 5 TDs, 2 INTs

    • Watkins: 16 catches, 227 yds, 2 TDs

  • OSU:

    • Miller: 16/24 passing, 234 yds, 2 TD, 2 INTs (18 carries for only 35 yds rushing)

    • Hyde: 25 carries for 113 yds

  • Urban forgot about Carlos Hyde again (one touch in the 4th quarter).

  • Braxton was banged up pretty bad and really shouldn’t have been in there late (awful INTs).

  • 3 of last 4 drives ended with INT (2) or fumble (1).

  • This defense needs an overhaul. Ryan Shazier declared for the NFL draft. Reports say that the reason Noah Spence was suspended was use of ecstacy.

  • Finished the season ranked 10th in the Coaches Poll.

  • Miller will probably come back. Hopefully lots of defensive recruits are on the way.

4Q: NFL Playoffs were exciting in the first round

  • Wild Card Weekend:

    • T-Rich fumbles first time he touches the ball. Indy falls behind 38-10 and still manages to beat KC.

    • Cincinnati was one-and-done again. Andy Dalton played poorly again in the playoffs. Bengals will probably have to consider adding another QB.

    • New Orleans shut down Chip Kelly’s Eagles to get a rare road playoff win.

    • San Fran has Green Bay’s number and won on a Phil Dawson FG in the Frozen Tundra.

  • Division Round this week:

    • Colts @ Patriots

    • Chargers @ Broncos

    • Saints @ Seahawks

    • 49ers @ Panthers
