Nick McElwee oversees Tri Yas, which puts on a triathlon on the infamous Yas Marina Circuit Formula 1 course in Abu Dhabi. The event has grown from 600 participants to 1300 in the span of four years. But Nick and his team realized that, with incredibly high levels of childhood obesity and diabetes in the region, the sport of triathlon could serve a much bigger purpose if they invested year round in the sport and the community by opening the race track to workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. This story is the perfect example of how one event on one day can have a positive impact all year long.
