Episode #92: An Inspirational Story of Blood Memory Healing, w/ Crystal Harrison Collin

April 06, 2022
Mandi Benecke and Naomi Marquez welcome Crystal Harrison Collin to our table. Crystal is an Anishinaabe Ikwe from Treaty 3 Territory and a band member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. She resides in Sioux Lookout, Ontario and is a proud wife, mother, and grandmother.

Crystal shares her life experiences as an Indigenous woman through public speaking and storytelling. Crystal’s TikTok content consists of Indigenous humour, jingle dress dancing, sharing words in Anishinaabemowin, and her love for literacy and culture. Crystal’s content inspires, educates, and brings happiness to others through her unique sense of humour and personality.

Crystal is the daughter of Donald Kelly Sr., of the Ojibways of Onigamig and Lillian Harrison of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, relation to Shabaquay, Parenteau, McIvor, Kokopenace and Catcheconias, Kelly families of Treaty 3 in Northwestern Ontario. Crystal’s ways of knowing and being in this world are informed by growing up in Dinorwic, Ontario and attending school in Wabigoon and Dryden, Ontario, as well as, residing in and working in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, and her subsequent choice to re-acculturate to her Anishinaabe and Salteaux roots has provided her with a transracial upbringing and environment. Crystal’s familiarity with viewing her world from a midpoint between these two divergent worldview platforms, depending on the company she keeps or the context in which she finds herself (perhaps at a sweat lodge or at a public speaking event), informs and fuels her desire to articulate bridges between different worlds. Crystal relies upon the guidance and wisdom of all her relations to lead her in the right direction and to enable her to honour them and benefit the people through her work.

“I am formed by the blood memory of my ancestors, both through their trauma and their strength.”
