Episode #169: Recast: Honoring My Indigenous Heritage and Living Authentically w/ Trevia Woods

September 20, 2023
Before we get started we would like to do a land acknowledgment. Mandi and Naomi live in the traditional lands of the hinonoeino biitoowu (Arapaho), Tsesthoe (Cheyenne), Nuu-agha-Tuvu-pu (Ute) and Ochethi Sakowin Nations.

We welcome Trevia Woods who tells us her story. A story of courage, strength, bravery, love, authenticity, and a commitment to her ancestors. Trevia Woods is a mixed-race Indigenous woman with nearly two decades of experience in bodywork, education, and community-building. She has roots in the Midwest and Colorado. After traveling the world, she is back in America finding her roots and how she belongs in the world. Trevia hosts the HELD community to help women remember their power by learning to establish traditions and self-care rituals while connecting with their own lineage and heritages without culturally or spiritually appropriating.

Trevia explains how her courage and her strength come from her ancestors and how she imprinted on her Grandma at a very young age. Her story and her follow-up episode (cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation) give us all an opportunity to learn. As Trevia says, “…because our best classroom is each other.” This is a recast of a previously published episode.

A note from Trevia: I want to acknowledge that I did not do my due diligence and double-check the pronunciation of the Catawba People in my land acknowledgment.  I should have double-checked and I was not modeling for myself how I teach others to do a land acknowledgement.  I am sorry for anyone who learned the wrong pronunciation and I am sorry to the Catawba people for mispronouncing their name.  Please go to this link to hear the correct pronunciation.  https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+pronounce+catawba&sxsrf=ALeKk0079B32C272mikcZl0_OBI7Lyn3jw%3A1618087753326&ei=SQ9yYPajE8OutQbz4q24AQ&oq=how+to+pronounce+catawba&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBAgjECcyAggAOgcIABBHELADUJI9WKJBYN1LaAFwAngAgAGMAYgBvQKSAQMyLjGYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6yAEDwAEB&sclient=gws-wiz&ved=0ahUKEwi27IHOxvTvAhVDV80KHXNxCxcQ4dUDCA0&uact=5
