Rev. Timoth Sylvia serves the community as Senior Pastor from Newman Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Rumford, Rhode Island. A graduate of Bangor Theological Seminary and trained Professional Coach, Timoth has served in Youth, Campus and Parish Ministry for nearly 20 years. His passions within the church center around learning with others what it means to be church and how to best be followers of Jesus in times such as this. Outside of his ministry with Newman UCC, he invests a good amount of his time and energy into advocating for children and families involved in the foster care system. As adoptive parents to three boys and foster parents to others over the years, Timoth and his husband, Peter, find great joy both in raising their sons and teaching others about the foster care system.  Timoth sits down with Mandi Benecke and Naomi Marquez to tell his story of growing up in a small, rural, Illinois community. He shares what it was like to come out both to his parents and to the community. The conversation is a very open, vulnerable conversation where Timoth speaks to his experience with church, becoming an ordained minister, and what “church” means to him. Naomi and Mandi ask burning questions to uncover the elephant in the room when it comes to the correlation between religion, judgment,  oppression, and how it is impacting our current day society.
