Episode 31: San Antonio Women of Rock Volume 1

January 30, 2014

Episode 31: San Antonio Women of Rock Volume 1This episode, we’re focusing on some great San Antonio bands with female vocalists. Huge shout out to Nina Diaz of Girl in a Coma who’s already in the studio recording her solo album and another shout out to Phanie and Jenn from Girl in a Coma for starting their riot girl side project, Fea. This doesn’t mean the band’s breaking up, just exploring new things. Honestly, I’m hopeful in the idea that this means that they’re using these projects to work things out creatively and return to Girl in a Coma refreshed and raring to go. Now, I’ve got to apologize that there won’t be any GIAC songs in this episode, but I don’t have any releases to play them on the show. It seems to me that when a band is on a label, it makes it that much more difficult to work with them. This isn’t a reflection on the band, just the process and red tape that comes with dealing with legal entities and people who are trying to watch their backs and are being use to getting taken advantage of. I’m planning on trying to work with the Girls during their time in these side projects, which are unrelated to GIAC, which means they are independent from any label or record exec issues. I know the girls would be down, they’re really down to earth and want what every other musician wants, to be heard.I know I’ve been saying this for almost a month now, but the changes that are coming are still moving along very slowly. No biggie though, it just means I can build up the excitement for when it does happen. One thing that might start happening that I haven’t mentioned are on air song or album reviews. Look forward to those sooner rather than later.Let’s get to the music now! We’ve got:Bite Lip Bleed - #16 on ReverbNation’s Indie/Ska/Punk chart, sounds like No Doubt. Featuring Jen Cavazos - Vocals, Robert Binovi – Drums, Jeremy Garza – Saxophone, Nick Valdez – Bass, Juan Luna – Guitar, Gilbert Covarrubias – Trombone, &  Laith Garet Fisk – Trumpet. Our photographer friend, RD totally digs this band, as do I. Here’s their song Alcohol.Celeste’al Descent - #10 on ReverbNation’s Alternative/Alt. Rock/Pop Punk chart, featuring Celeste Nichole Munoz (Lead Vocalist), Isaac Isaiah Alvarez (Guitar), Josue Jimenez (Drums) and Corbin Beltran on Bass. This band has been requested the most out of any band for being spotlighted on the show via Twitter and Facebook. Here’s Celeste’al Descent with Mind Over Heart.Langton Drive - #4 on ReverbNation’s Indie/Rock/Queer Rock chart, featuring Jessie Riot - Vocals, Christine Rebel - Drums, Jes DeGeneres - Bass, and their new Guitarist, Jessica Perry. These ladies helped us out by killing it for the 210 Toys for Tots show in December last year and are a great group of ladies. It was really great getting to meet them and work with them. Here’s their eponymous track, Langton Drive!Octahedron - ReverbNation’s #1 on the Indie/Alternative chart, Octahedron features Elena Lopez - vocals, Ruben Lopez - bass, Austin Jimison - Guitar, and Daniel Puente - Drums. They’re currently looking to record their debut album and I was able to hook them up with a spot opening up with 210 favorite Slowlikefire about a month ago. Look for some more great shows with these guys. Here’s our debut of their new recording, Cold Reality.Rain on the Aftermath - Ranked #5 on ReverbNation’s Rock/Progressive/Alternative chart, Rain on the Aftermath features Andrea Cerda - Vocals, David Garcia - Drums, Jacob Vallejo - Guitar, Chuy Hernandez - Guitar, and Chris Holt - Bass. These guys play at the Falls and Retox Bar constantly, so you have no excuse not to make it out, although I still have to check them out live as well. Here’s Sucker Punch, off of their recently completed album.Secrets & Irises - Ranked #8 on ReverbNation’s Indie/Electro/Alternative charts and includes Kelsey Novak - Vocals, Jesster Boyce - Guitar, Joey Gonzalez - Guitar, Josh Barrera - Bass, and Carlos Jimenez - Drums. These guys killed it at Indie Fest 3 and are all really nice people. Big shoutout to Josh and Joey, who I’ve seen at a couple of Local 782 meetings. Local 782 is San Antonio’s DIY music commission which is all about indie music and helping DIY’ers get things done. Here’s one of my favorite tracks off of their debut EP, Golden Circles.Televators - #7 on ReverbNation’s Metal/Progressive/Hard Rock charts, featuring Bex - Vocals, Jaime Flores - Drums, David McCall - Guitar/Keys, Keith Alan - Bass. I have to say, Bex was one of the fastest musicians to respond to having their music played on the podcast and returned their release immediately. These guys don’t fool around. Look for them to start shaking clubs around SA soon, this is the Televators with Einstein’s Dreaming Again.Vagenda - Finally, #5 on ReverbNation’s Rock/Metal/Alt Rock charts, Vagenda is Cindy Osbourne - Vocals, Philip Capitano - Drums, Rob Howe - Guitar, and Ian Train - Bass. Technically from Converse, right by where I live in Live Oak, here’s Vagenda with their song, Reminiscing.Track List:Bite Lip Bleed - AlcoholCeleste’al Descent - Mind Over HeartOctahedron - Cold RealityRain on the Aftermath - Sucker PunchSecrets & Irises - Golden CirclesTelevators - Einstein’s Dreaming AgainVagenda - ReminiscingLet us know what you thought of the episode or the individual bands on the episode by leaving us a voicemail at (210)802-1197, or find us on Twitter and Facebook at 210 Local Media.
