Get Some Help

October 20, 2022

Recently, I came to a colleague with a problem I had been struggling with for over 10 months. I showed him a few things on a screen share, and he solved the problem in less than 10 minutes. The thing is, my colleague told me nothing I wouldn’t have known; it was something I could have come up with and told a client myself. The problem with being a professional coach is that we get so used to being the expert that, faced with our own problems, we forget that asking for help is beneficial and the key decision to make when we’re struggling.

In this episode, I discuss the professional coach’s conundrum and why seeking outside help is critical to a coaching practice. I describe coaches’ tendency to avoid asking for help when they don’t know how to improve an aspect of their practice and explain how that avoidance can later hurt their business. I also highlight the value of investing time, money, and effort into a community of experts and underscore the need to eliminate stressors in a business before the year closes.

“We’re not experts in everything. When you’re in a situation where you’re not sure what to do, go get some help instead of trying to brute-force your way through the problem.” - Jos Willard
