“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

At this point in his life, Elijah, the mighty prophet of God, was no longer moved by the spectacular display of God‘s power. He had matured and wanted only substantial results.

The powerful wind, earthquake, and fire did not move him. However, as soon as he heard the 'gentle whisper', he responded. I believe that that 'gentle whisper' was the voice of wisdom. In other words, Elijah was now responding to wisdom, more than to power. He was no longer enamored by spectacular displays of power. Instead, he went after the wisdom of God.

David told his son Solomon, ‘Wisdom is the principal thing. In all your getting, get wisdom.’  A lot of ministers, churches, Christians and religious people are walking in powerfully noisy but irrelevant activities; totally lacking in the strategic wisdom of the Spirit. This is why it's almost as though religiosity were synonymous with mediocrity. Of course, the Bible already said that God’s people are destroyed because they lack knowledge.

Elijah had come to the point where he was sick and tired of the wind. He was fed up with earthquakes. Fire falling from heaven without impact repulsed him. He wanted lasting impact in his nation.

When Elijah asked the question 'What's the Point?' God was compelled to respond with a more strategic assignment to Elijah. The nature of his ministry changed. From the spectacular fire-spitting prophet, he became a maker of kings and disciples.
