Protect your music gear with a mobile security camera

April 21, 2014

Imagine having a security camera that you can take with you on tour and it sends you updates when the motion detector is triggered by someone entering your vehicle, trailer or where ever you are storing your gear. I had a great opportunity to go for a walk with an app developer who says he has this very solution and best of all the app is free.

Perhaps one of the worst feelings is getting ripped off, but making it even worse is when your gear, the very lively-hood of your music tour, is stolen. This happens to thousands of musicians. We all know that a band’s equipment can run into the thousands of dollars and it only takes a few seconds to steal. Aside locking it up and is some cases sleeping with your guitar, keeping your eyes on your gear 24-7 is not a reality, until now with a wireless security camera. So you can at least catch someone in the act and have a good video clip to show authorities.

I spoke with David Moss, Co-founder and CTO of People Power while I was on a trip to San Antonio, Texas. We took a walk through “backwoods Texas,” where I learned about his app that turns your old phone into a security camera, detecting motion and emailing you the video instantly. The app is free and available on iTunes, you’ll just need an old iPhone or iPad, a wi-fi signal (you can subscribe to a data cell plan when on the road).

According to Moss all you need to do is install the Presence app on the device and you’re set to go. He recommends getting a stand and a long power cord to give you more placement options. The company is expanding their devices to soon include android phones. Check out his very fun and informative YouTube Channel
