Season 3 Episode 5 - My guest is Ismael Ortiz, Minister, Deputy Permanent Representative at the Mission of Mexico to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Ismael is a good friend and a colleague that has been working in International Trade and the WTO practically since its inception. He has been stationed in Geneva for over a decade, which is when I first met him.

In our conversation, he talks about studying economics and his journey into the public sector, which was initially meant to be for a few years and has continued throughout his professional career, primarily because of his public service vocation. We then move on to a nitty-gritty discussion on the evolution of the WTO, balancing diplomacy and innovation, the constant negotiation with Capital-based colleagues, and he finally offers some potential avenues to progress in the ongoing WTO negotiations. Overall we had a brisk and insightful conversation on what it means to work as a Trade Diplomat. I hope you enjoy it.
