MedicCast Episode 495
Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. In the news item this week, we have a special interview with Lisa Booze from the Maryland Poison Center to share her updated information on Loperamide toxicity for EMS providers.
Then in this week’s special tip segment, I have an interview we did in last year’s EMS World Expo podcast studio, sponsored by Physio-Control which features EMS World publisher Scott Cravens on the conference and what to look forward to in this year’s show in New Orleans. That will be coming up after the news item.
All of these segments this week were recorded thanks to the continuing support and sponsorship of the Physio-Control corporation. Thank them for supporting your EMS podcasting community.

News —
Loperamide is a nonprescription medicine for diarrhea known as Imodium® and also sold as generic products. What you might not know is that it has peripheral opioid receptor activity and is gaining attention as a drug with abuse potential. In therapeutic doses, it’s not expected to cause central nervous system effects because a protein (P-glycoprotein) that pumps drugs out of cells prevents it from crossing the blood-brain barrier. And so, sedation, euphoria, and respiratory depression are not seen in therapeutic doses. Check out this segment with Lisa Booze from the Maryland Poison Center as she tells us about this often overlooked drug of abuse.

EMS Tip of the Week: Scott Cravens on Last Year’s EMS World Expo
EMS World Expo is just around the corner coming up in October and I will be back there in the Physio-Control sponsored podcast studio. We’ll be back in New Orleans with Chris Montera from the EMS Garage, Sam Bradley from the Disaster Podcast and more. Because it’s coming so close, here’s the interview we did last year with Scott Cravens, the Publisher of EMS World magazine and EMSWorld.com. We hope you’ll get excited and come out to New Orleans to join us for the Expo and check out all the great stuff we’ll be showing off there.
