Red Fox Authors: Carol Rinke - Why Half of Teachers Leave the Classroom

June 15, 2021

The statistics are bleak: Almost 50% of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years in the classroom. Through eight in-depth case studies, Why Half of Teachers Leave the Classroom: Understanding Recruitment and Retention in Today’s Schools clarifies the factors influencing teachers career paths, depicts the toll that teacher attrition takes on the teachers themselves, and argues for placing teacher voices at the center of their own career development.

Dr. Carol Rinke is an associate professor of education, the assistant dean for the school of social and behavioral sciences, and interim associate dean for teacher education at Marist. She teaches courses in STEM methods, partnering with local schools and community organizations to develop authentic learning experiences, and maintains an active research agenda. Carol is also a founding member of the Creating an Inclusive Community dialogues on addressing race and racism in the college classroom.
