The pandemic has put no stop to the world of music retail. Demand is through the roof and COVID has heavily impacted instrument manufacturing, creating challenges for retailers to keep up with demand. Karl Neurauter who runs the acoustic room at Chicago Music Exchange, a legendary local retailer of high end and vintage guitars, basses, and drums, describes the factors that have led to this dynamic. We discuss similarities between the relationships among vintage and high end retailers to breweries, guitar as a social equalizer, and the influence of live instrumentation in pop music concerts. The notion of musical evolution is often cited in press cycles, we break down what that is and whether that’s relevant for all artists.
