Despite God’s continuous faithfulness and miracles that He did for the Israelites, they quickly turned away from Him at the first sign of trouble. The people were scared of the report of strong men and fortified cities that inhabited the promised land. They didn't want to listen to Joshua and Caleb, but wanted to turn back to Egypt.  God didn’t know what else to do with this rebellious people but punish them, take their inheritance away from them, and give it to someone else.

"The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty..."Numbers 14:18
