Blackstone Podcast 2.0: The Importance of Company Culture

August 17, 2016

Company culture is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but it's also frequently misunderstood or misrepresented. What does the term “company culture” really mean?

On the surface, it seems simple enough to practically explain itself. Simply put, it's the atmosphere of a workplace created by the individuals that work there. But, while this is certainly true, it doesn't really do the idea justice. Creating a great company culture involves more than having a basketball goal and some bean bags laying around the office (though we do love both those things around here). For many agencies, company culture refers to a number of intangible assets that help to align team behavior with the core values of the company. At Blackstone, we place a ton of emphasis on creating a great company culture because we know that it's the foundation of a truly great agency. Naturally, it was only a matter of time until we dedicated a podcast to it.

In this episode of the Blackstone Podcast 2.0, we’re joined by Blackstone Media COO, Rebecca Brady, who has long played an integral role in influencing the daily culture of our agency. Unsurprisingly, she was beyond excited to discuss why this fun little buzzword carries so much weight in our industry.

Blackstone Media strives to make our content available to everyone. For a written transcription of the latest Blackstone 2.0 Podcast, see below.

Chris: Right welcome to the Blackstone Media podcast, my name is Chris Flynn, I’m your host. We’d like to switch things up, our past few podcasts have been very specific on departments here at Blackstone and we wanted to change it up and bring some new faces and talk about one of our favorite topics at Blackstone Media which is culture. We have what we feel has been a blossoming culture and it’s been part and process to the changes we’ve had to make over the last several years. Blackstone Media has grown several facets of what Blackstone Media used to look like and we feel it’s definitely necessary and I think something of a lesson to be learned, a story that we can share with the world. So this is going to be kind of freeform talk for the most part because everybody has a lot of cools stories and insight they’d like to add on such an awesome topic. So we appreciate you jumping in and listening and we look forward to feedback so I just wanted to kick it off. With me we have Leslie.

Leslie: Hey there.

Chris: And we also have Rebecca Brady who is the COO of Blackstone Media. She is probably the most influential part of the culture since she is responsible for influencing what part of the culture comes in the door, from clients to employees, and we really respect and cherish her for that. So as far as, again the context of the conversation, I think kind of starting from the beginning where Blackstone started, more I guess in respect where we started a couple of years ago, to me definitely this iteration of Blackstone kicked off within the past two years. I myself and Rebecca have been kind of here for a significant amount of time in Blackstone’s growth for the past couple of years and we’ve seen a lot change and a lot happen, not only have we been part of that but we’ve also been instrumental in kind of influencing it and wanting to take it further.

And definitely once you point out that when we used to talk about culture it’s not just about, you know, what’s cool in the office. It’s not just about what’s fancy in the office,
