EPISODE 910 - Manson Exposed: A Reporter's 50-Year Journey into Madness and Murder

September 11, 2019

For Beyond 50's "History" talks, listen to an interview with Ivor Davis. An investigative reporter, he was at the Cielo Drive murder scene in Beverly Hills before noon on August 9, 1969, surrounded by the clamoring world media. Based on his decades-long investigation, he'll explain why "Helter Skelter," one of the most bizarre and famous murder theories that convicted Charles Manson and his gang, is NOT the real reason behind those notorious murders. Prosecutor Vicent Bugliosi's use of Helter Skelter worked perfectly. He convicted Manson and his gang—sending them to prison for life. Years later, Davis would learn from a former prosecutor on the trial that they had used his book "Five to Die" as a road map for the prosecution. The real motive for the murders was to make homicide detectives believe that Robert Beausoleil, who already was in prison and charged with the July 1969 murder of Gary Hinman, was innocent of the crime. Manson felt responsible for Beausoleil's arrest—because he had ordered the killing of Hinman.
