NO TEARS FOR MY FATHER
A memoir of incest by Viga Boland

In today’s Vigaland Podcast, #4, I am sharing with my readers/listeners how it felt to move away from Mrs. Nastrom, the kindly woman who had looked after me until I was 7 years old. My parents had worked hard to purchase their own home in Yagoona, a very new suburb some distance from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. This area was being settled primarily by immigrants and my parents were now the proud owners of a box-like brick home.
We had little furniture and all my possessions, a few books and my one-eyed doll, fit into a box. There was no indoor flushing toilet such as we take for granted nowadays. The toilet was an outhouse set well away from the house and a scary run in the dark when the urge hit.
Today’s listeners will also hear of a second unwanted sexual encounter I had with the father of some classmates that left me wondering about fathers and daughters some years before my own father proved he was no better, and perhaps a lot worse, than that father was. You will also hear about the kitten I found and lost and how bit by bit, I was learning that life takes away so many of those things we love and cherish.
