Thanh Minh, or the Day of the Dead, occurs annually in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese honor their ancestors on this holiday, which falls on the fifth day of the third lunar month.
According to the Gregorian calendar, the holiday falls sometime in late March or early April.
The Vietnamese use this holiday to visit the graves of their deceased family members, taking the time to clean them and lay out offerings in the form of food and flowers.
They also burn incense in honor of their ancestors.

In English, the holiday goes by a number of different names, including Ancestors' Day, the Festival for Tending Graves, Pure Brightness Festival, and Tomb Sweeping Day.
The holiday has its origin in Chinese culture, where it is known as the Qingming Festival.

In Vietnamese culture, it is believed that people continue to live on in soul form even after their death.
Ancestor veneration is a major part of Vietnamese culture, and most Vietnamese have an altar to their ancestors in their house.
The Vietnamese did not traditionally celebrate birthdays until they were influenced heavily by Western culture.
Instead, they remembered the death anniversaries of their family members.
It is common to hold banquets on these days and offer up food on the ancestors' altar in the home.
Usually the altar holds photos and name plates of the specific ancestors they are honoring.
Whenever the Vietnamese need guidance in an important decision, they often offer a food sacrifice to their ancestors and ask for help making the decision.
