Was Uncle Sam A Real Guy?

Welcome to September 13th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a fair swap and how our nation got its uncle.

If you remember the movie Freaky Friday then you already know this cautionary tale for parents and kids: the grass is not always greener. If parents could step into the life of their kid they would discover that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.  And vice versa. Why not meet in the middle by celebrating National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day?  It’s a great way to encourage young chefs in the making and take a day off from the dreaded question: what’s for dinner?  Sure it might be pancakes or mac n cheese, but it could also be delicious and when kids get to stretch their legs a little, they may just find their calling.  Be sure to agree ahead of time on who gets to do the dishes.  After all that’s where things could get a little freaky.   

When we hear the name, Uncle Sam we immediately picture the man in the star-spangled hat, decked out in red, white and blue. But did you know that Uncle Sam is based on a real person? During the War of 1812, Samuel Wilson of Troy, New York worked in a meatpacking plant, providing American troops with food for the war effort. It was his job to stamp barrels and crates with the letters U.S., which of course stood for “United States.” But his coworkers began calling the food “Uncle Sam’s,” as they poked fun at their fellow employee. The joke was on them, however, as the name stuck and today Uncle Sam personifies our nation’s strength and idealism. On Uncle Sam Day, celebrate  your own patriotic spirit and be aware of what your nickname says about you.  After all, it could last for centuries.
