Managing Dehydration in Disaster Situations

February 05, 2015

Dehydration is a concern for rescuers and victims alike in disaster situations. This week on the Disaster Podcast, hosts Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and Sam Bradley are joined again by Dr. Joe Holley from the Paragon Medical Education Group to talk about a common disaster problem, dehydration. Both disaster responders and patients are at risk for dehydration.

The responders get dehydrated easily when doing the hard work of digging people out of their trapped locations and the victims who are trapped have often been unable to drink anything for days. What is the pathophysiology behind dehydration? We’ll ask Dr. Joe that and also find out when patients need IV rehydration therapy versus when they can rely on oral rehydration methods.
