The Trouble With Tourniquets (part 2 of 2)

August 28, 2014

In this very special episode of the Disaster Podcast we pick up where we left off last week with our discussion on hemorrhage control. We are joined again by trauma surgeon, inventor and educator Dr. Dennis Filips to talk about common misconceptions in controlling severe bleeding. Dennis is the creator of the IT Clamp that is an amazing and simple tool to quickly control severe bleeding in most situations.

Hosts Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and Sam Bradley along with Dr. Joe Holley from Paragon Medical Education Group all continue the discussion on hemorrhage control with a look at tourniquets. There are some common misconceptions and challenges with the application of these trauma management tools.

Tourniquets have to be applied correctly and reassessed frequently to make sure they are doing the job they are intended to do. Sometimes they must be adjusted, tightened or a second proximal tourniquet applied to get the desired effect of stemming flow of blood to the distal extremity.

Make sure you check out last week’s first half segment on the “Not Your Father’s Hemorrhage Controlâ€Â where the team asks Dennis about initial misconceptions about major trauma and hemorrhage control from his battlefield experiences.
