The Canine Paradigm
Episode 197: The relationship between the decoy and handler
The relationship between the decoy and handler is one that needs to be based in honesty, integrity, vulnerability and compassion. There is so much information both said and unsaid that is bouncing between 3 entities, the decoy, the handler and the dog.
Then you have the audience who are watching and taking notes along the way. So what is it that makes this type of dog training such a high level of involvement?
A decoy really relies on the attention to detail and instruction from a handler. In return, the handler has to trust and be ready to act on said instructions to ensure that the dog has a good experience and is learning the most accurate and relatable behaviour.
This relationship is intense and rapidly changing and evolving which is why there are so many variables all colliding. It sounds difficult, but it doesn't need to be when everyone plays their part well
