Infants are powerless. They can cry and scream, even wave their arms and legs about. But they can’t walk, let alone swim. A baby alone in the middle of an ocean will be driven along by waves and wind. It has no power to determine a course. It has no power to even survive. Isn’t the mental picture of an infant adrift distressing?

Keep that picture in mind when you hear Ephesians 4:14-15, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.” (NIV)

This passage tells us the way to grow in Christ. If we want to be mature and survive deceitful and fake teaching, we must speak the truth in love. First, this requires that we know the truth. Are you reading God’s word? Do you need to start a reading plan? Are you learning from God’s word what is right and good?

Second, we must love others. Are you following the Spirit’s prompting to be more loving? Is the attitude with which you speak one of love and grace? Stop drifting through life like a baby screaming and kicking, and getting nowhere. Speak the truth in love, and grow.
