Welcome to the Sandi Savage show. I am your host, Sandi Savage. This is a weekly podcast. Released every Tuesday, dedicated to crafting a healthy life in our mind, body and spirit. We’re going to be talking about becoming a little better each day with simple strategic steps and how to actually achieve the dreams we have. Maybe you’re someone who doesn’t even dream anymore.

Let’s find that fierce in you again. Oh my gosh. So I am a first-time mom of a newborn at the age of 50, a wellness and business coach, a ninth generation Kentuckian. And I love all things crafty. I mean, give me all the yarn, please. And I have the most amazing husband Tim Savage. So thanks for listening. Y’all let’s get started.

Well, hello, my friends. How are y’all doing? Oh my gosh. I hope you’re doing great. We have had just a fantastic time here in Kentucky, hanging out with our sweet baby Josephine. And I wanted to come to you today about a topic that has really served me well in the past few months, especially with a newborn and it’s called habit stacking.

Now, most people, when we want to change something in our life, we go, okay. So for instance, I want to get healthy. So we make all of these drastic changes. Like I’m going to change everything. The way that I eat, I’m going to drink a gallon of water a day. I’m going to exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

I’m going to say no to every cupcake that comes into my viewpoint. And we try to do everything all at once. And what happens is if we fail at one small thing in there, then we say, yeah, see, this is not going to work. I’m going to give this up. And we miss really hitting the goals that we have.

It’s just like sitting down and writing a book. So I am writing this book that I’ve been promising you all for ever, because I know now, like I’ve done the internal work to figure out exactly what viewpoint I want it to come from, but I’m not in my goal of writing this book saying, you know what, today I am going to write the entire first 30 chapters.

You know, that’s not going to happen. I have to set a goal to make it happen, but I can’t write the whole book in a day. So what I started doing is something called habit stacking. So let me take you back to the example of getting healthy. Instead of doing everything all at once, you could start with, I’m going to add an extra glass of water into my day.

I’m going to wake up and drink a glass of water. And before I go to bed, I’m going to drink a glass of water and that would add some water intake. Now, once you’ve got that down, then you move to the next one and getting it down could just take a few days, or it could take you a week to get used to doing something.

I know for me in my self care, I had to have it stack because there was no way, you know, it’s like, okay, now I need to take care of myself. I am going to do all the things with exercise and do all the things with my food and make sure that my skin is probably taken care of and make sure that I’m doing every single thing that I need to do every single day to make sure that I’m in a appropriate self care routine.

Okay. So that’s not going to happen. I’m not going to change all that at once. So what I started, so here’s what I started with my skincare. It’s so funny. So I have a girlfriend who does skin and she is a great, great gal to go to she’s in Versailles. Her name is Kaylyn skincare by Kaylyn. And she was,

you know, she was doing a dermaplane on me one day and she said, you know, what is your, what is your actual skincare routine? Tell me what your skincare routine is. And I said, well, I, you know, try to remember to take a wet wipe to my face every night before I go to bed, that’s it,

you know, she’s like, oh my gosh, what are you doing? And I’m like, I know, I know, I know I need to make the time and just figure out a system for my skincare. That really works. I’m 50. So, you know, I really do need to be taking care of my skin. And so I started doing habit stacking and started out with just making sure that I was cleaning my face morning and night.

Once I got that down, then it was okay. Now I’m going to make sure that I am putting a toner on in the morning. And then I’m going to put on a little eye cream at night. So I started that little routine. And then I was like, okay, I’m going to make sure that I’ve got some lip balm in there.

I’m going to make sure that I do an exfoliation twice a week. So I started adding in the small habits and now it’s a part of my morning routine and my night routine. And listen, when we start to do something, it always takes us a little bit longer to do when you’re trying to figure something out, how to do it. What’s the,

what’s the actual best way to fit it into our schedule. And you know, that takes time. But once you actually get that and you go, oh, I have this down. It just takes you have a minute. Do you know what I mean? That’s with an, a thing that we do once you understand and establish your routine, then it goes really fast.

And so I started doing that with my skincare. And let me tell you what, I’ve actually seen a dramatic difference in my skin, just even in the past month, since I started taking these little small steps of stacking up my habits, and every few days I would add a little thing in. So I really wanna, I really, you know,

I hope that this serves you all, like it has served me to start thinking about your goals and break it down, break them down into little bitty pieces, like little bitty pieces and add in a little bitty piece every few days until you get your routine down. And then, then you’ve got your routine. And then you can move on to another area and say,

now I’m going to start doing these small habits because really those little tiny habits that you do every single day, whether it’s your health or your career, or even adding more fun into your life, your finances, your relationships, all those things. Like we are the sum of our small, consistent behaviors that we do every single day. And so if you want to make a change,

then you got to change some of those small little behaviors. And with habit stacking, it makes it really, really doable and sustainable. Like those are small, simple things that you can do to make it a lifestyle for you so that you can actually succeed in the area that you want to change. So, listen, I hope that you pick this up because it has done a ton for me.

Let me know, like let you know, DM me, let me know what is something, you know, if you’re even having trouble figuring out like, gosh, I want to change something in my career. How do I go about doing that? Dm me. And I can help you break it down into really small, simple steps. I’m creating a resource for you guys right now that you’ll be able to download.

That is just a, it’s a printed out tracker. Like you can print it out and you start tracking stuff. Cause I mean, you know, if you’re anything like me, I love a checkbox, like checking something off or writing a line through something where I’m like, that is done. Okay, don’t lie. Have you ever again, I do this all the time.

Like you do something and you go, wait a minute that wasn’t on my list. Hold on, let me go add that to my list so that I can mark it out. I guess I do that. I haven’t been known to do that before. So, you know, ask me, I’ll help you out. I’ll help you break stuff down and hopefully I’ll have this tour ready for you here in the next week or two.

And you can print that out and that will help you start making the little small incremental changes in your life that you want to make in order to achieve the goals that you want in your life. Because listen, there are a lot of different, you know, I can break my life down into 10 different things right now. I’m of categories where I go,

you know, I I’m feeling great in this area. I’m not feeling great in this area. So I really need to break that area down and see what little incremental changes I can make. So it’s work that I’ve been doing and I’ve been digging in and really asking hard questions about what I want my life to look like. And you know, you just,

you have to, you have to develop the discipline in order to achieve the things that you want to achieve, you know, little kick in the pants, but there you go, you know, you can’t be upset about the results that you don’t have because of work that you haven’t put in. So, you know, there’s, you’re kicking the pants for the day.

Anyway, guys, I hope you all are. I hope this has helped you in some way. If you have an area of your life again, DM me, or you can email me podcast@sandisavage.com And I’ll get back to you and, and help sort some of that out, have a fantastic week and I will talk to you all again next Tuesday,
