6 Resources to Help Parents Teach Children the Importance of Online Safety

October 13, 2021

Media and music can be a master over our children, and it is our job to protect them!

Some websites/apps to watch out for:

* Omegle Kids – This “talk to strangers” website has zero parental controls, allows children to go on the adult site and adults to go on children’s site without filling out any forms or creating an account, and allows video sending, recording, and many more features that do not protect our children.
* Whisper App – An allegedly anonymous free social networking software application that allows “tweens and teens” to share secrets have access to photos, fonts, upload pictures, and if granted permission, allows accessing the child’s location.

There are many ways to monitor what your child is doing in their free time online. It would be smart to view your children’s browser history and learn more about the websites and apps they are on.
Resources for children:

* “Too Much Screen Time” is one of our Sea Kids episodes about temperance. It works as a great tool to help our children make friends in a healthy way and stay off the internet and social media.
* Clicker the Cat, by Kyla Cullinane, is a fictional character that learns about internet safety in multiple different ways to, in turn, teach online safety to our kids through stories and books.

* Technology Tail, by Julia Cook, is a digital footprint story that brings to life how pictures posted and things written on the internet impact people both for good and bad reasons. It helps simplify what a digital footprint is for children.

* Children Clicking, by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross, is a book that explains the ramifications of internet usage, internet friendships, and people not always being who they say they are online.
