Protectors of the Book 177 – Job Part 13 – What Kind of Friends are We?

April 20, 2020

In an effort to address common challenges to God or the Christian faith, Keith returns to respond to a few short clips from the world of Youtube. The presenters are not known by us, or the context of the lecture or debate. Sticking only to the brief statement, we look at why their logic fails, and sometimes backfires.

Religion makes people feel guilty. Is it wrong too doubt religion, or to question what it teaches? Doubts are normal, and questions can indeed expose faulty dogmas. But it can also enforce what is true. Having a question doesn't make you a bad person, sin makes you a bad person. Claiming you're a Christian when you don't believe in the teachings of Christ makes you a hypocrite. Confront those doubts, ask questions, but seek the truth.

There is no God in the patterns. A first-year college experiment in critical thinking seems to cast a poor light on the matter of God. Do you want to always make the right choice? It begins with two types of errors, and making false-positive mistakes (Type 1), over the more dangerous false negative (Type 2) error. Though both represent errors, the Type 1 error is always better to make. It allows you to live to see another day, and learn to advance to recognizing real dangers and real safety. Is the Type 1 error the source for belief in God and other supernatural things? Maybe, probably, but it keeps you safe until you can learn about real threats to survival. with enough Type 1 errors, while more data is gathered and analyzed, you can now advance to discovering which dangers are real or imagined. You can begin to distinguish which agencies, supernatural or natural, are beneficial. Which ones are very real predators who want to do you harm?

Debunking functional design. In setting up an argument, the presenter places God in a kind of circular logic called "Infinite Regression." hint: the instant your argument entered infinite regression, you've just lost your argument. It exposes a weakness that falls apart, contradictions in what you're trying to prove.

The claim: if the complex design requires an even more complex designer, then who created God. He has to be even more complex than his creation, right?

The answer to this infinite feedback loop has two basic solutions. The first is to examine each and every claim to the solution or to address them in batches. This is what relativism tries to do. however, with an infinite number of solutions, there is never an end to it.

since this is circular logic, using the point in the claim as part of the answer, the thing to do is take it out of the answer. In other words, claiming God is inside the created universe, as yet another created thing is pointless. If he is to be proved the actual creator, by definition, he is outside the limits of time, space and matter. He is the uncaused cause of creation as we know it. It requires no faith, but it diffuses the circular logic.

If the solution to the creator is not satisfactory, a different logical argument to disprove God needs to be set up than the one presented.
