PODCAST (17:48) -- The California State Legislature, on a 75-0 vote, has passed Assembly Bill 2152, a prohibition on the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits anywhere in the state. 
Sabrina Ashjian, California State Director of the Humane Society of the United States, was on the June 21, 2020, KSCO Pet Radio program to talk about AB 2152, the anti-puppy mills legislation now before the California Senate.
AB 2152 is vital legislation that closes a loophole to make good the legislature's earlier commitment to rid California of these poor animals, often sold fraudulently, previously abused, overbred, in poor health, or all of these.
We also discussed a local Los Angeles measure to close live wildlife markets and next month's HSUS Animal Care Expo, a virtual event being held online July 22-24. Early registration is $29 through July 7th.

Help Stop Puppy Mills
AB 2152 replaces a current/recent law that allowed pet stores to sell dogs, cats, and rabbits provided "the animal was obtained from a public animal control agency or shelter, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals shelter, humane society shelter, or rescue group, as specified."
That as supposed to prevent pet shops from dealing in these mass-bred, but as crime so often manages to do, a loophole was discovered.
Some breeders are believed to have created "sham" rescues to provide puppy mill animals to pet shops at high prices in violation of the spirit if not the letter of current law.
AB 2152 fixes the loophole, only allowing pet stores to "provide space to a public animal control agency or shelter, or animal rescue group, to showcase adoptable animals provided the animal displayed for adoption is both sterilized and adoptable for total fees not to exceed $500."
Under the new law, if the adoption only occurs once the adopter pays the fee, then showing unaltered animals prior to adoption, apparently common practice, appears to be within the law.
Many humane organizations worked to pass AB 2152, which is hoped to slam the door on the sale of puppy mill animals in our Golden State. Please take a moment to thank your assemblymember. Also, please remember to ask your state senator to support the bill in that house. I feel confident the governor will add his signature when the time comes.
