Episode 92: Corporal Works Of Mercy

The seven Corporal works of Mercy – feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, and bury the dead – are very important parts of outwardly showing our Christian love to the world. But how do we do them right? Who are “the least of these?” In this episode, Mom and Dad answer these questions and explain what the Corporal Works of Mercy are.

Thank you, listeners! It’s such a blessing to have an increase in our audience. Your listening has helped us keep making these podcasts!

That aside, the Corporal Works of Mercy are found in Matthew 25. Mom was close!

Corporal simply means “body,” much like as Dad says, corpus. So, they’re the physical works of mercy, as evidenced by their names. We are called to our own ministries. Maybe you like helping with a soup kitchen, or maybe doing prison ministry. If you are not involved in a Corporal Ministry, we encourage you to join one and serve the least of God’s children.

The Corporal Works of Mercy are not convenient, as Mom and Dad mention. Visiting the sick, burying the dead, feeding the hungry, these are all difficult tasks, physically and often emotionally.

God gives us all opportunities to help those in need, God wants us to help other humans. Human beings have a dignity that is shown in the Corporal Works of Mercy.

If you see someone you can help, help them! These Works of Mercy are the works of saints; some saints spent their whole lives working toward one or two of them. Maybe we can’t do that; we have kids to feed and clothe, or aging parents in need of comforting and care.

But wait! These things are found in the Works of Mercy. We do these things often without realizing it, and if we do it without expecting anything in return, then we’ve accomplished a work of mercy.

Dad really ties up the Corporal Works of Mercy right at the very end by saying “Do nice things.” And I can’t think of a better way to summarize it, so go out, and “do nice things!”
