Noobs & the Whovian

116.5 Introducing Peter Capaldi

August 19, 2020

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet that forgot to introduce its main actor! It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian, and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

* We completely forgot to introduce the newest Doctor!* Prior to Who, Capaldi was already well-known.* He was in a deleted scene in Maleficent.* He played Cardinal Richelieu in BBC One’s series The Musketeers, but had to leave after the first season, which aired in 2014…* He was most well-known as Malcolm Tucker in BBC’s The Thick Of It. Apparently Tucker has quite the potty mouth?* Most importantly in my book, right around the time of the big announcement in 2013, Capaldi played a small part in World War Z where he worked as a medical professional in the World Health Organization. He was credited as “WHO Doctor.”

* At 55, Peter Capaldi was the oldest actor to play the Doctor since Hartnell. Now, this specifically means ongoing Doctor roles, so John Hurt is not included, though he was 20 years older when he played the War Doctor.* In fact, he was the same age that Hartnell was when he started playing the role in 1963.* Ready for some numbers?* He’s the first Academy Award-winner to play the Doctor, having won for Best Live Action Short Film when he wrote and directed 1995’s Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life.* He’s the second Peter to play the Doctor, remembering the Fifth Doctor’s Peter Davison. So now we have two Bakers and two Peters.* He’s the third Scotsman to play the Doctor, including Sylvester McCoy and David Tennant. Tennant, you’ll remember, did an English accent, whereas McCoy and Capaldi kept their Scottish accents.

* Capaldi was a life-long Doctor Who fan. He actually sent scripts in, much like Star Trek fans of the 60’s would do. He was eventually invited to visit the BBC by Barry Letts, then-producer of Doctor Who. He says this is what kicked off his interest in writing, acting, and directing.* Within the Whoniverse* He appeared as Lobus Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii as well as a member of Torchwood named John Frobisher in series 3 of Torchwood.* He actually exists in the Whoniverse… sort of. In the 2013 comic The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who, the Eleventh Doctor visits a parallel universe where there is a tv show about his life. The Eleventh Doctor tells actor Matt Smith that Peter Capaldi would be good to play him in the future.
