Midnight Looms 051 – ROBIN HATCH – May 18th 2021

May 20, 2021

It’s gonna take something really special to top last week’s 50th episode with Vancouver Retro Wave band, ACTORS, but we think we’ve done it. Tonight, we have our first IN-STUDIO PERFORMANCE in 7 months! By synth virtuoso ROBIN HATCH!! A classically trained pianist, Robin has toured with OUR LADY PEACE, DWAYNE GRETZKY, THE RURAL ALBERTA ADVANTAGE, and more. Her synth skills are highly sought after, but tonight we have her all to ourselves as she flexes her chops on 3 SYNTHESIZERS and a DRUM MACHINE, inside our PLAYDEAD CULT DIY concert space. We are so geeked for this!
In between songs, Robin chats with our host, GOBS, about her experiences with insane music teachers, stage fright, and a giant, room-sized synthesizer named TONTO. She also gives us a run down of her gear, so synth- junkies, DO NOT MISS THIS!
In honour of our guest and renaissance woman, Robin Hatch, we get mighty eclectic with the song selections. The ride begins with BRAND-NEW TUNES from the likes of  GARY NUMAN, RICH AUCOIN, SPARKS, WHITEHORSE, RAPHAEL WEINROTH-BROWNE, with even more new stuff later in the program from THE FLOWERS OF HELL and SMALLTOWN DJs collabing with the legend that is BOOTSY COLLINS. GOBS explores the musical FAMILY TREE that led to NYC psych-rockers, STEADY SUN, and rounds out the program with THE BRIDE (something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue). There’s plenty of sounds from the TRUE LEGENDS OF MUSIC thrown into the mix. DEVO, THE JAN HAMMER GROUP, OINGO BOINGO, RUSH, STEVIE WONDER, and a selection from the soundtrack of CULT CLASSIC, THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
What a ride indeed. Now how the hell are we gonna top this?!
