Can you have success after a concussion or traumatic head injury? Every single day people are struggling with this invisible brain injury that has a tremendous impact on how you function in your day-to-day life.

Did you know: Head injuries can come from everywhere: Work Being in a car accident Domestic violence Being in the military Or a fall or accident Sports. It is estimated that as many as 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreational activities per year and as many as 50% go unreported. Research shows that if you have a concussion especially sports-related, your chances increase with having repeated injury.

What is a concussion?

A concussion, also known as a mild “traumatic brain injury”, is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or the body. It causes the brain to move rapidly in the skull and changes how the brain normally functions. Signs and symptoms can range from headache, nausea, confusion, fatigue, memory problems, sleep disturbances mood changes (personality changes) Sensitivity to sounds, light Trouble reading a book, or even processing information.

Today an incredible young lady with a Mental Edge is on the show with me today as she wants to share her story and message of hope for others. Brooke Freeman is 22 years old and is a recent graduate from Catawba College with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. During undergrad, she was a student and an athlete. She played for 4 years on the women’s soccer team. She is currently a graduate student at the Medical University of South Carolina in the physician assistant program.

Pay attention: Are you or someone you know acting differently (personality and mood changes)? Sports concussions per year: Children and teens make up approximately 70% of all sports-related concussions seen in the Emergency department. Sports with the highest incidence are football, hockey, rugby, soccer, and basketball.
