Original Science Fiction – Makeshift Stories

Redux – Laika

December 01, 2019

On November 3rd, nineteen fifty-seven, the Soviet Union launched the first living creature into orbit; a stray dog named Laika pulled out of a Moscow animal shelter. The Sputnik II had no re-entry capacity, so this was a one-way trip. In this alternate version of the story, Laika is a passing celestial being accidentally trapped by the earth’s gravity and dragged reluctantly to its surface in the middle of a Moscow winter.
Stranded, in the body of a dog, the alien being is forced to intervene in the early Soviet space program to get a ride home.
